More than a century's worth of prestigious events and high-profile participants weave through the history of Hotel del Coronado. No less than 11 U.S. presidents have visited the restored and expanded Victorian- era icon. It rests on Coronado Island, a bridge away from sunny San Diego, California.
Like heads of state, countless business communities turn to The Del for its ability to host events with style and substance. Even Hollywood comes calling—over and over again. Enduring films such as Some Like It Hot, starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe, secured The Del’s celebrity status for all time.
Today’s groups experience the seaside resort at its peak. One of the latest enhancements comes in the form of a new spa, recently named to Condé Nast Traveler’s Hot List. A new fitness center waits just around the corner, offering the latest in equipment and a studio for aerobics, spin classes, and Pilates.
Other recent additions include a new oceanfront restaurant, 1500 Ocean, which rounds out a choice of nine food and beverage outlets. Most recently, the hotel added the new cottages and villas at Beach Village, an exclusive enclave with private pools, hot tubs, and other amenities well-suited to the VIP lifestyle. Additional options include rooms and suites in the Victorian Building (a national landmark) and the sea-inspired Ocean Towers & California Cabanas.
After settling in, groups convene in some 65,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space. One of the most fanciful venues, the Crown Room, features 30-foot ceilings of sugar pine dotted with crown-shaped chandeliers designed by Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum. The larger Oceanfront Ballroom lends an elegant backdrop to meetings with its built-in stage, tapestry draperies, and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
The largest venue, the contemporary-style Grande Hall, offers nearly 11,000 square feet of unobstructed event space, a hydraulic lift for large production equipment, and numerous breakout rooms on the lower level. Outside, the central Garden Patio and oceanfront Windsor Lawn contribute wide-open spaces that take full advantage of San Diego’s ever agreeable climate.
Behind the scenes, members of the highly trained conference staff work tirelessly to ensure seamless events. They even customize theme parties, including Clambake on the Beach or Fiesta Fantastica. A themed event like Hollywood South, complete with movie memorabilia and celebrity look-a-likes, promises a blockbuster affair every time out.
Timeless appeal and amenities designed for today’s sophisticated travelers make The Del a natural for groups large and small. Here, everyone contributes another chapter to the rich history of an American treasure.
