The Robb Report called Florida's Ocean Reef Club one of America's most exclusive club communities. Here, where the membership roster reads like a Who’s Who of Fortune 500 CEOs, the staff treats every guest like a member. And that level of treatment can only be described as first-class, which also applies to the location, lodging, recreation, and other amenities of this remote private venue.
A 55-minute drive from Miami International Airport leads to the gated community, located on 2,000 acres at the northern tip of Key Largo. Once at the club, participants discover a world unto itself-one whose amenities include a dozen restaurants and lounges, a gourmet grocery store, boutiques, a 4,000-foot executive airstrip, and a 175-slip marina.
Groups assemble in 30,000 square feet of meeting space distributed between a dozen rooms at five sites around the property-all equipped with wireless Internet service. The largest groups (up to 600) convene in the new Town Hall complex, where a 7,500-square-foot ballroom boasts a 2,550- square-foot prefunction area and a rooftop terrace specializing in sunset mixers.
Meeting planners wishing to factor in the Florida sunshine look to Buccaneer Island, which hosts poolside and beachside events for groups of virtually any size. A veteran team of staff planners can arrange anything from a Caribbean beach bash to a white-glove dinner and dance back at the Town Hall.
Visiting groups stay in the club's 140 guest rooms or in rented condominiums, villas, and waterfront estates scattered about the property. A multi-million-dollar upgrade of the oceanfront and water-view accommodations began in May 2006. Completed in October, the interiors sport an all-new island decor, marble flooring throughout, and such amenities as high-definition flat-screen TVs and baths with oversized tubs, separate showers, and dual vanities.
During breaks in the schedule, visiting groups can take advantage of the 48 recreational offerings, including a rarity in the Florida Keys: golf. Few of the islands have enough land to accommodate an 18-hole course. But Ocean Reef Club features two of them. The Hammock Course winds through a tropical hardwood hammock-the only course in the world to do so. The more forgiving Dolphin Course skirts the hammock’s challenge but requires good distance off the tee and careful readings of the greens.
Other free-time pursuits include snorkel or scuba trips to nearby coral reefs, tennis on eight courts, visits to the spa or fitness center, cooking classes, sunset sails, and deep-sea fishing charters.
The club's 61 years of experience serving an elite clientele make it ideal for today's high-powered meetings and corporate retreats-mixed, of course, with the special brand of island incentives found only in the Florida Keys.
